Microdermabrasion Creams and Cleansers
A few years back,
I foolishly invested in a little gadget called DermaNew.
While I wasn't overly impressed with the gadget itself, I was thrilled
with the microdermabrasion cream that came with it. The catch was
that the replacement cream was $36.
That led me to think
about what made this cream so great. It was those darn
microdermabrasion crystals, beyond that it was just another nice
cream. A little search of the internet and I found that
microdermabrasion crystals are Aluminum oxide crystals AKA corundum and are
also the actual crystals used by licensed
professionals in dermabrasion machines. They
can be purchased from a variety of vendors. It
took a while to find one that sold in smaller quantities, and I think it
was still something like10 lb. of crystals, but it was around $30.
I've had these crystals four or five years now and they're less than half
gone!
Purchasing crystals this way, you
can make your own microdermabrasion cleansers and creams. You can
adjust the amount you use to suit your own skin. It's really a
great value. I just did a quick search and found this vendor
www.dermsystems.com with
crystals at $25 for 8 lb. That's just one vendor, shop around
for who you feel comfortable with. Additionally, I've noticed a few
sellers on eBay are carrying them now.
You want the 120 grit for this
kind of application.
Moisturizer
Moisturizers are a tough one, it's hard to find good ones at
good prices. However, there is one really great one that's the best
value. Olive oil! Olive oil is loaded with Vitamin E and is
wonderful for your skin. A few drops is all you need. It's
especially effective around the eyes where natural oil production is
lacking.
Hyperpigmentation (Age Spots)
This is something I
struggle with, hyperpigmentation. I love the sun, and it's caught up
with me. I now never start my day without first applying SPF 70
sunscreen. Yes, I said 70, I like Neutrogeona, but that's just
me. Use at least an SPF 15 every day, even in winter and even
indoors. There are a couple things that I found help fade dark
spots, but both take diligence and patience.
The first
is simply lemon juice. The acid and Vitamin C in the lemon juice really,
really does work. You have to leave the juice on the spots for at
least 10 minutes every day, some say twice a day and it must be from a
fresh lemon, not bottled lemon juice. This is cheap and
effective.
The most common
prescription for fading age spots is hydroquinone. It can be
purchased in the drugstore in products such as Porcelana, but the United
States limits the potency to 2% for over the counter, and it's not very
effective at that strength. Prescription strength requires a doctor
visit, which means money and time. In Canada, there is no need for a
prescription for 4% Hydroquinone and pharmacies such as
www.canadapharmacy.com will
ship it to you.
I still think
the lemons are more effective and absolutely the cheaper and safer route.
