Frugal Baby Tips and Tricks

Baby Food

Making your own baby food is not only frugal, it's fun and really makes a mom feel good because she knows exactly what her baby is eating.  No worries about sugars and preservatives.

When your baby is just beginning to eat solids, remember to introduce only one food at a time to identify possible allergies. As your baby grows, and you know the foods are well tolerated, you can begin to blending flavors.

Simply cook the fruit or vegetable by steaming or even microwaving until it is mushy, then puree in the blender or food processor.

I would always then pour into ice cube trays and later divide them into baggies that held as much as the baby was eating in one sitting at that time.

Toddler food is more fun to make  because you can be creative and create a little one dish wonder.  There are many baby food recipes out there if you search the Internet, but it's not rocket science.  Simply cook your meat source to well done, and chop into small pieces if not already using ground meat.  I would often use lean ground turkey.  Cook your vegetables and bake/microwave a potato, sweet potato, or use brown rice.  Once you have your protein, healthy carbohydrate and vegetable source, add it all together to your food processor or blender with some broth or water, adjusting until it's the consistency your child is currently eating.  Again, freeze in ice cube trays and then place in baggies when frozen.  These can easily be defrosted in the microwave.

These meals aren't going to seem too appealing to you, just like the store bought variety isn't, but they babies absolutely love them.  I personally liked to add a little garlic or onion powder to give the meals a little nicer flavor.  Just steer clear of salt or extra sugars your baby doesn't need.
