Clothing Savings

End of Season Clearance

There are really only two ways I purchase clothing, and this is my favorite.  I don't like normal,  sale flyer type of sales.  Those are fine if you need something specific but the best deals out there aren't even advertised.  They are the end of season sales.  You can easily, and I mean EASILY, find clothes 80-90% off if you shop end of season!  I have literally gotten a $100 jacket for $10.  It's unbelievable the savings you can find when you are close to a new season.   Any large chain store will have a clearance rack and they're NOT just full of the stuff nobody wanted, they're also full of the stuff the store manager simply over ordered.  We have two teenage girls and one of their favorite stores is Kohls, where they can regularly find great junior style clothing at 70-90% off in their clearance section.

Online Clearance

Don't limit those end of season clearance shopping trips to the malls, you can find  similar deals online.  As I write this in early February, one pop over to American Eagle Outfitters ,  and I can see they are currently avertising their Winter Clearance with savings of 70%.

The jacket to the left is a good example, regularly $89.50, it is currently $29.95.  Already have your family outfitted with enough jackets for the year?  Think about buying ahead for next holiday season!

If you keep watching, most likely stores such as these will have even deeper discounts depending on their overstock.  Often, when shopping clearances online, you'll find they eventually get down to sizes that just aren't the average person, such as 00 jeans or large size shoes.  However, it's worth keeping an eye on if you enjoy a particular store or brand.  You never know how much overstock they have and how much deeper in discount clearance items may go.

Always check the clearance section of online stores and always look for coupon codes first!

An added bonus is that many of the online stores do not charge sales tax.  Watch this, though, because it varies according to the retailer.

Coupon Codes

When shopping online, be sure to search out any coupon codes you may be able to use on your purchase.  These online form of coupons can save you several percent off your purchase or allow for free shipping.  They're worth the few minutes it takes to find one.  A couple of my favorite places to check are.  For instance, I just took a look at www.couponcabin.com and found that  there's a coupon for A&E Outfitters for free shipping if I were to spend $100.  That sounds like a lot to spend, however, if I were to shop only their clearance, I would receive 60% or greater off my purchase and have it shipped free using my coupon code.

Second Hand Stores

The popularity of second hand stores has increased dramatically within the past few years.  It's always amazed me  that people I know would turn their noses up at the idea of second hand stores, but admittedly shop garage sales.  I have been shopping second hand stores since our children were infants, the bargains can't be beat.  This is especially true in children's clothing where they're often outgrown before they're worn out.

Everyone knows about the Goodwill and Salvation Army, but many aren't aware of privately owned second hand stores or chain stores.   My personal favorites where we live are Once Upon A Child and Plato's Closet .  Stores such as these are extremely particular about  quality.  Plato's Closet, which is geared for teenagers, will also only accept clothing that is current in trend.

There are also number of online clothing shops that specialize in kids used clothing such as  www.cheapkidsclothes.com.

A good thing to keep in mind, also, is that many people give clothes at the end of year as they're wanting to claim the donation on taxes.  This makes January one of the best times of year to shop the places like Goodwill and Salvation Army for a better selection than other times of year.
